For years I struggled with ADD. I was misdiagnosed, confused and over prescribed medications that did much more harm than good. But I finally found a treatment methodology that works. Excercise and LOTS OF IT. If I run for 30 minutes at a good pace and lift weights for 30, 90% of my symptoms disappear. I am not kidding. I have come to believe that my body overproduces something that makes my mind wander off periodically. When I excersise I reset my mind some how. I don’t know why it works but it does.
If I go two days without the gym, then I will loose the benefit. Working out everyday gives the max symptom control. Miss anymore than one day and I am back at square one.
There is also a diet component. I must avoid all products that contain HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. And hell if it isn’t in everything from bread to salad dressing. If I have something by accident my husband can tell right away. I get tired, snappish, and annoyed by everything. I can’t hold my mind still and I forget everything.
I hope this helps people out there. Let me know if it does.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThanks for the article. I’m 29, been dealing with ADHD and the symptoms my entire life. I too have found that diet and exercise are the absolute best medicine for the symptoms. My brain starts to function a million times faster and crystal clear immediately after some good cardio.
Having ADHD and NOT exercising leads me straight to low confidence levels, my attention span diminishes, can’t complete small lists of tasks, semi depression, all kinds of crap that sucks.
When I do exercise (at least 10 min of cardio a day) 30 minutes a day (usually on elliptical, treadmill, hiking) I have a super confidence boost, complete more tasks through out the day, have energy, brain becomes lightning fast and I have the ability to multi task like no other.
Tried Ritalin once, what a joke. Yeah, lets do some speed and goto school! Speed and caffeine are two of the worst things to give someone with ADD, it over stimulates them causing them to not act like themselves any longer. Eventually turning you into a social retard who can’t think for yourself.
In some cases I now consider ADHD or ADD, or whatever the doctor wants to call it, as a gift. If you have it and work with it you can achieve amazing results that a non-ADD person can’t. You are capable, through proper diet and exercise, to reverse the effect of ADD and become MORE aware, alert and increase your attention span.
The high fructose corn syrup is a good one to look out for. Thanks for pointing that one out. It’s well known these days that the ingredient is one to avoid but I never knew the connection with ADD. I will definitely throw anything out that has it.
I did the same with hydrogenated oil and noticed many health benefits within a week. It also woke me up to how poisoned our food is in the US.
What the hell do we have an “FDA” for anyway?
Thanks again
